The Kiama Gamefishing Club was founded in 2001 following the vision of the inaugural President Mark Way. The idea came to fruition when it was noted that a significant number of the members of other regional gamefishing clubs resided in the Kiama local area. These fisherman came together and felt that it was an ideal opportunity to add to the Kiama region and form this Game Fishing Club.
The founding committee was formed in the year 2000.
President: Mark Way
Vice President: Brett Cooper
Secretary: Deborah Cameron
Treasurer: Peter Verhey
Recorder: Virginia Way
Weighmaster: Greg Cameron
Harbour Representative: Trevor Newcombe
Safety Officer: Geoff Rogers
Newsletter Editor: Louis Whant
The committee was also ably assisted by Mrs Helene Rogers.
The committee and the president worked tirelessly to establish the club. This came to fruition in June 2001 when the KGFC became an affiliated entity and with the New South Wales Gamefishing Association sanctioning in July of that same year. Renowned game fishing identity Mr Peter Goadby agreed to honour us as our club patron. The Kiama Gamefishing Club gantry was christened in May 2001. The club’s thanks go to Mr Stuart Beck of Evermil for his very kind support for the development of this centre point of the harbour. The KGFC would not have been able to get off the ground if it was not for the generosity of the foundation sponsors.
The impressive trophies sponsored by these wonderful people can be viewed in the sports bar of the Kiama Leagues Club.
KGFC hold an annual tournament named the Blowhole Big Fish Classic first held in 2002. It is held in April each year. This tournament has another local business as its main sponsor, and our thanks to Anthony Koder of Pacific Pine Warehouse. The tournament has consistently offered over $25,000 in prizes and attracts up to 50 boats each year.
As for being a winning club, Kiama has taken out the prestigious capture trophy for Southern Zone every year that we have so far been in existence. Virginia Way is the holder of the only world record currently held by the club. Our members can also boast Australian records, New South Wales records and a Junior Australian and N.S.W. record.
KGFC membership continues to grow. We started the club with 90 members and this year (2004-2005) we reached 129 members and 25 boats. The club is financially sound and will continue to grow with the continued support of its members and the enthusiasm that the committee and membership display.
